L.A. Pomeroy Wins AHP Freelance Writer Award for Second Consecutive Year

Northampton, MA–June 11, 2012—For the second consecutive year, L.A. Pomeroy has earned the AHP Editorial and Graphics Award for Freelance Writer Equine-related Journalism (print or online), with Hats Off for the Horses, a profile of milliner Sally Faith Steinmann, of Maggie Mae Designs, whose story of haute couture in support of retired racehorses was published Spring 2011 in Horses in Art Magazine.

Pomeroy accepted her plaque at the 2012 AHP “Ride into History” Seminar Awards Banquet, sponsored by Publishers Press, June 2, in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. Participation in this year’s awards represented 90 AHP members and 686 entries. A total of 167 awards were presented following the decisions of a 22-judge panel that included Jeanne Bernick, editor at Top Producer; Ray Daudani, new media director at WWBT-TV NBC 12; Sherry Ross, color analyst for the New Jersey Devils/WFAN 660AM; Linda Smith, VP Publishing at Brock Associates; and Pat Smith, managing editor at Global Journalist.L.A. “An excellent story about a woman who turned her artistic bent for hats into a passion for hats that honor horses,” said the judges. “How interesting to read about all the research this woman does to find inspiration for the hats she makes for equine stars!”

“I am very honored to have earned recognition from my professional peers two years in a row,” said Pomeroy. “As an ‘equinista’ (equestrian + fashion) and contributing lifestyle editor, I love seeing this go to a feature that embodies my commitment to content that unites equestrian tradition with modern culture. And the true champion is Sally, whose hats support Thoroughbred retirement and honor former champions.”

The AHP Seminar kept the Northampton, MA-based writer trotting: as campaign manager for Figure in the Great American Breed contest during the Student Award Party, and as an expert panelist with Jamie Clark (Yellow Barn Media) and Jenny Blandford (UK Ag Eq Programs) on Content Marketing: If Content is King You Need to Build the Throne, moderated by Whitney Allen (USHJA).

Freelancers Natalie DeFee Mendik, Milton Toby, and Lisa Wysocky were also among this year’s AHP Award winners. Individuals whose work (entered by an AHP publication or digital member) placed included Ryan T. Bell, Jeannie Blancq, Abigail Boatwright, Deb Eldredge DVM, Tracy Gantz, Lauren Giannini, Lisa Kemp, Merri Melde, and Christy West.

Pomeroy’s 2010 Freelance Award winner, Angel Heart Farm: Where Dreams Comes True, for Modern Arabian, profiled cancer survivor, Tracy Kujawa, whose horses offer therapy and comfort for terminally ill children and their families. “In an article on this topic,” judges said, “a writer must walk a fine line between heart-tugging and maudlin. This struck the perfect balance, with a strong lead and good supporting quotes.”

In addition to her unique focus on equestrian lifestyle, Pomeroy copy writes for Arenus®/Sore No-More®, Breyer®, Whinny Warmers®, and is Media Liaison for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), whose executive director, Bob Cacchione, accepted the 2011 Pfizer/AHP Equine Industry Vision Award.
