Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows Announce Officials for 2023

Returning Faces Include Alan Wade as Course Designer

The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows will welcome new and returning faces among its officials for 2023, including world-renowned course designer Alan Wade of Ireland. One of the premier stops on the nation’s hunter-jumper show circuit, the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows return to Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY, May 9-21, with a full schedule of world-class competition and family-fun activities.

The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows host competitions for riders of all levels and ages, ranging from young children on ponies to Olympic veterans aboard their grand prix mounts. Week 1 (May 9-14) is USEF ‘National-6’ rated for hunters and jumpers and designated FEI CSI3*; Week 2 (May 16-21) is USEF ‘Premier-6’ rated and designated FEI CSI4*.

Highly respected by the world’s top riders, Wade has been designing courses since he was young. He started learning course design at age 12 by helping designers at local shows, including his father Tommy Wade, a famed show jumping competitor, course designer, and show jumping Chef d’Equipe for Ireland. Wade’s courses have been seen at some of show jumping’s most prominent events, including the 2017 Longines FEI World Cup Final and 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games. He has also been course designer at such major annual U.S. events as the Hampton Classic, Winter Equestrian Festival, Washington International Horse Show, American Gold Cup, Palm Beach Masters and the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows.

Paul Jewell (USA) will assist Wade with his designs in the International Arena and also serve as a hunter course designer alongside Nancy Wallis in the beautiful Hedge and June Road rings.

Returning as Co-Chairman of the Spring Horse Shows is five-time U.S. Olympic rider McLain Ward. In that role, Ward continues to help Old Salem Farm produce a world-class horse show with updated class offerings and challenging courses.

Other familiar faces at Old Salem include Allen Rheinheimer, who returns as competition manager, Alan Keely as the weekend ringmaster, and the team at SEL Photography offering the official horse show photography.

Jumper judges for both weeks include Kevin Giblin (USA), who serves as president of the ground jury, alongside ground jury members Peter Doubleday (USA), Mike Lowry (USA) and Hendrik Nijenhuis (NED). Joining them are Maria De Lourdes Arrambide (MEX) and Paul Pereech (BER) for weeks 1 and 2, respectively.

Overseeing the hunter rings are judges Shane George, Jessica Lohman and Amy Nunnally during Week 1, with Oliver Brown, Tucker Ericson and Walter Lee taking over during Week 2.

“Our team has been hard at work as we continue our efforts to build Old Salem into one of the nation’s premier horse shows at a facility that is second to none,” said Scott Hakim, president and owner of Old Salem Farm. “We are so grateful for everyone who helps to pull our Spring Horse Shows together, and we look forward to another fantastic year.”
