Green and Performance Hunters Open the Hedge and June Road Hunter Rings
The Old Salem Farm September Horse Shows commenced Wednesday with several Open Jumper classes in the Old Salem Farm International Arena and various hunter divisions in the Hedge and June Road hunter rings. Bringing home one of the first blue ribbons was Lauren Skowlund of Wellington, FL, who piloted Raquel and Alexandra Lopez Inc.’s Charlyn to victory in the $10,000 1.40m Open Jumper.
The Old Salem Farm September Horse Shows host competitions for riders of all levels and ages, ranging from young children on ponies to top Grand Prix stars aboard their elite mounts. Week 1 (September 10-15) is designated CSI4*/2* while Week 2 (September 17-22) is designated CSI3*. Old Salem’s September schedule also includes a National/Level 2 event (September 25-27).
Skowlund and Charlyn were one of 17 horse-and-rider combinations entered in the $10,000 1.40m Open Jumper, which featured a winding two-phase course designed by Ken Krome. They topped the leaderboard with a double-clear score of 39.754 seconds.
Molly Ashe Cawley (USA) and Louisburg Farm’s La Rosso Lady took second in 40.418 seconds, while Jessica Mendoza (GBR) and Ammann Equestrian LLC’s Chapeau PS Z finished third in 41.363 seconds.
Other jumper highlights included the $2,000 1.25m Open Jumper, where Emily Stirling of Pawling, NY, faultlessly tripped the timers in 36.293 seconds for the win aboard Mavis Spencer’s Cristal De Menardiere. Andrew Welles (USA) and his Dorchester won the $4,000 1.35m Open Jumper in a double-clear time of 34.296 seconds.
Competition also kicked off in the beautifully manicured hunter rings with several Green and Performance hunter divisions. Among the week’s first winners were Caberneigh, owned and ridden by Kelsey Calabro of Water Mill, NY, to victory in the Green 3’ Hunter under-saddle class, and Kirsten Rikkert’s Rooster, ridden by Halie Robinson of Santa Barbara, CA, to victory in both Green 3’3”/3’6” Hunter over-fences classes.
