Philip McGuane Wins $100,000 FEI 3* Richard M. Feldman Memorial Grand Prix at Lake Placid Horse Shows
Philip McGuane (IRL) won the $100,000 FEI 3* Richard M. Feldman Memorial Grand Prix, the featured event of the I Love New York Horse Show, Week 2 of the 2025 Lake Placid Horse Shows (LPHS), Sponsored by The Bainbridge Companies, LLC, and Presented by Sea Shore Stables, LLC. McGuane claimed the win on Evergate Stables’ 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare Orphea HQ over a 34-horse field at the newly renovated North Elba Showgrounds. The horse shows, sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), conclude on Sunday, July 6.
After 14 entries rode clean over the 16-effort first-round course designed by Alan Wade (IRL), the largest jump-off field in the class since 1990, they returned to try the eight-jump tiebreaker course. After the first three faulted, 18-year-old Campbell Brown (USA) turned in the first clear on MMK Equestrian LLC’s 11-year-old Zangersheide Colina Z, finishing in 41.91 seconds. Four rides later, Katie Dinan (USA) took the lead with a clean ride in 39.65 seconds on Out Of The Blue SCF, Grant Road Partners LLC’s 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare.
The next rider was McGuane, and he took the lead with a clean ride in 38.98 seconds which proved to be good enough for the win. Beat Mandli (SUI), who finished clean in 39.41 seconds on Grant Road Partners LLC’s 9-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare Qoachella, placed second, with Dinan finishing third and Brown fourth. Fifth went to 21-year-old Alexander Alston (USA), who finished clean in 43.19 seconds on Spider, Alston Alliance LLC’s 12-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare.
“I took a little bit of a risk at the beginning so I could have enough time to jump the last double, which caused some issues for some of the riders,” McGuane said. “My mare is an unbelievable jumper, super fast across the ground, so unless I make a mistake she doesn’t want to jump down. So I just tried to stay cool, and today it worked out.
“This is my first time in Lake Placid,” he continued. “The two weeks here have been amazing. The warm-up is fantastic, the ring is beautiful, very good footing; I will definitely be back!”
McGuane’s victory, coupled with his sixth-place finish in last week’s $100,000 Grand Prix of Lake Placid, earned him the Richard and Diana Feldman Perpetual Trophy for Excellence and $2,000 as the rider winning the most prize money in Lake Placid’s two Grand Prix events.
