The severity of this attack warrants a comprehensive and regular check on the health and functional status of every officer likely to come in contact with such drugs in the line of their work.
The CURO system could be readily adopted as a means of assessing not only the immediate effects of drug exposure (Fentanyl) on motor function, but also the long-term effects of mild exposure on individual health and fitness e.g. coordination of movement, strength and speed of muscle response.
The CURO system can also be used as a means of assessing the physical fitness of individuals, determining when they are ready to return to duty after an injury, either sustained at work or in their private life. Officers depend on each other in their line of work and knowing that an individual is now physically fit and capable of performing to the best of their ability offers reassurance to the individual and their whole team.
Finally, in the line of duty, the CURO could be developed as a real-time monitoring system for drug exposure – monitoring muscle function as an officer approaches a suspect and runs the risk of drug exposure. The CURO could then be used to alert the officer of exposure to drugs, as well as alert assistance in the form of backup and medical support and provide evidence of exposure for use in a Court.
