Ruby’s Passing Enchants with Murder, Adventure, Drama and Equestrianism
Houston, Texas (October 5, 2012) – Steven Long, famed equestrian, editor, journalist and humanitarian, has combined his love of horses with the events that took place in his hometown of Dickinson, Texas to tell a sweeping story of adventure and murder. Ruby’s Passing is based on a series of brutal murders that took place in 1955 in the badlands of West Texas. Elias Logan deserts the US Air Force and is traveling to the West Coast of Mexico to start a new life. On his way through Louisiana, Logan meets Ruby McShane, the wife of a prosperous Texas oilman. When Ruby offers Logan a ride, he monopolizes on the offer, slaying Ruby and her family in their beds and casually eats a sandwich in their kitchen before striking out on a spellbinding journey that takes him across the scorching expanses of the Chihuahan Desert. Throughout the novel, Long intertwines references to horses and breeding, including the famous cutting horse Cutter Bill, natural horsemanship methods, and horses he has owned, currently owns, or has ridden through the rugged Big Bend region of western Texas.
Ruby’s Passing is a fictional account based on fact. Long is originally from Dickinson, Texas and knew the actual Ruby Macpherson and her son George, both of whom were murdered in 1955. As an 11-year-old, their murders were a profound shock to Long at the time and stayed with him over the passing years. He was inspired to write the work of fiction as a way to immortalize Ruby and George, as well as bring their story to a wide audience of readers. As Long’s fourth book length work and with its ties to truth and reality, Ruby’s Passing is a crime drama told from the mind of a horseman and journalist.
Long began his career in radio and quickly moved to print, where he has served as an editor and publisher for most of 11 years. He served as editor and publisher of Galveston’s In Between Magazine, an award winning alternative weekly famed for its gritty investigative work. He was also a feature writer for the Houston Chronicle and covered the Andrea Yates and Enron corporate scandal for the New York Post. An avid horseman, Long is the current owner and editor of Horseback Magazine and has made contributions to Western Horseman magazine in addition to securing one of the last, if not the final interview with the late actor Tony Curtis for Cowboys and Indians Magazine.
