Zukerman Wins $2,500 Old Salem Farm Hunter Derby at 2024 Old Salem Farm September Horse Shows
Kennedy, Fischer Win Their Respective Open Jumper Classes
The Old Salem Farm September Horse Shows welcomed 22 horse-and-rider combinations for the $2,500 Old Salem Farm Hunter Derby on Saturday, where Michael Zukerman of Mill Neck, NY, rode to victory aboard Jawid Khwaja’s 5-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Ozera.
The Old Salem Farm September Horse Shows host competitions for riders of all levels and ages, ranging from young children on ponies to top Grand Prix stars aboard their elite mounts. Week 1 (September 10-15) was designated CSI4*/2* while Week 2 (September 17-22) was designated CSI3*. Old Salem’s September schedule also includes a National/Level 2 event (September 26-29).
Saturday’s competition at Old Salem Farm featured several hunter classics and the $2,500 Old Salem Farm Hunter Derby, where Zukerman and Ozera secured the win. The duo also earned one of the USHJA 3’ Hunter Championships on Friday, sharing the honor with Hillary Rheinheimer of Deep River, CT, and Dana Mills’ The Weekend.
Finishing second in the Derby was Keirstin Scott of Newburgh, NY, aboard Carrado, a 7-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Makena Nyhuis. Jill Mastoloni’s 7-year-old Zangersheide gelding Dash Parr claimed third with Ryan Petronelli of Bethel, CT, in the irons.
Other hunter highlights included the Pony Hunter Classic, where Cleary Phillips of New Canaan, CT, took first and third aboard Glade Run Farm LLC’s Falling Moon Huckleberry and Catrine Golia’s Royal Treasure, respectively. Emily Smith of Riverside, CT, and Vivian Golden’s Ibet finished second.
Sophie Brown-Proctor of New York, NY, and Audrey Choma of West Newbury, MA, joined Phillips in the winner’s circle following successful performances in their respective Classics. Brown-Proctor claimed top honors in the Amateur Hunter Classic aboard her Incandescent; Choma brought home the blue in the Junior Hunter Classic aboard her Grateful.
Addison Slye of Andover, MA, also had a successful show, riding her Conrido to second-place honors in the Junior Hunter Classic and walking away with the Junior 3’6” Hunter Championship. She also earned the division’s Reserve Championship with her Casino 71.
