PASSION, PEDIGREE AND PERSISTANCE- Thoroughbred Pedigree Breeding and Racing consultant.

By Candice de Stefano

Every month the business of thoroughbred pedigree bloodstock brings me excitement! December, after the Keeneland Sales lacing the wreaths with plaid ribbons at home is my favorite time of year. Though my upstate New York home office faces a beautiful panoramic view, my desk is piled with pedigree data base information, and auction catalogs from Keeneland & Fasig Tipton Tattersall’s year sales.

What I do best is to identify potential black type graded stakes horses. I assist clients that breed- to-sell or breed-to-race under their own stable colors. Then, there are my host of high profile and secondary racetrack trainers that rely on my bloodstock analysis to assist them in positioning a private purchase or newly claimed horse. When my telephone rings then it is off to the races for me; whether it’s a mating, in trying to figure out what is the best strategy for starting a fresh two year old prospect.

My theory – “The right blood breeds the right horse, it’s in the blood”

As pedigree analysis of the 2009 colt “Unstoppable U” by “Exchange Rate” (standing at Three Chimneys, KY) out of “Naseem” by “Point Given” was my personal highlight this year. “Unstoppable U” entered in the third leg of the Triple Crown the Belmont Stakes. For me, this was the equivalent of being nominated for an academy award. “Unstoppable U” was winner in his first .start- 3/31/2012 Maiden Special Weight Aqueduct Racetrack New York. His second debut at Belmont Racetrack April 27 one mile on the dirt he won by 6 ¼ lengths! I was not surprised but thrilled inside because once again I knew my mating would result in a decent runner. Growing in Northern Westchester (Granite Springs, my home town) is predominately known for hunter- jumpers. It is surrounded by some of the most beautiful farms, Old Salem Farm, North Salem, and Golden’s Bridge Hunt. My early passionate love of horses and hounds inspired my study of great hunter-jumper blood lines. Granite Springs is also the home to Stonewall Farms owner Barry Schwartz, and former president of New York Racing Association.

The greatest horse to look through a bridle 1976 Spectacular Bid by Bold Bidder out of Spectacular by Promised Land. He did not reproduce himself as a sire of sires for racing; however he did reproduce himself in son known as MYTENS, a Grand Prix winner & sire in Germany. The bold bidder bloodline crosses prominent in hunter jumper, three day eventing and dressage horses. Years of persistence and careful consideration a pedigree mating daughter of Runaway Groom by Blushing Groom to Spectacular Bid, resulted in Runaway Valentino who stands in New York.

Runaway Valentino’s Test breeding in 2008 resulting foals of excellent conformation and temperament. My mating of 2011 filly Spectacular Rivkah by Runaway Valentino out of Shawnee Legend by Miswaki recently sold to Southland farm, near Orlando, Florida.

I like to consider myself a personal and professional research assistant to breeders, owners and trainers alike. I am privileged to have international representation and over twenty five years experience in both racetrack and farm management as bloodstock consultant. Though most of my work is in Kentucky and Southern Hemisphere, lately, I have been expanding in the New York region given the New York Breeders Awards Program. This program is the most outstanding in U.S… I pride myself on team work and knowledge, giving back charity. Horse rescue has also been my privilege over the years. Upon request, and as a courtesy to my Elite Equestrian readers, for any thoroughbreds that are rescued or adopted, we at Bloodstock International will provide pedigree research gratis.
