The British Are Coming For the International Polo Cup at Grand Champions Polo Club
Wellington, FL – November 13, 2012 – The British are coming to Wellington. Grand Champions Polo Club will host the International Polo Cup pitting England against Team USA on Sunday, November 25th at 3 p.m.
The 20-goal championship game will feature some of the top players from England and the U.S. in the United States Polo Association-sanctioned international tournament.
“This is a great opportunity for the community to see international polo,” said Peter Rizzo, executive director of the U.S. Polo Association. “Having both a women’s and men’s division is extremely unique and makes it exciting.”
A women’s seven-goal game will be held at 1 p.m. featuring some of the top women’s players in the world including the United Kingdom’s current 5-goal ranked player Nina Vestey, at age 30 is the best women’s polo player in the world, and former 5-goal ranked player Sunny Hale of Wellington.
Marc and Melissa Ganzi of Wellington will host the holiday weekend event and compete in the games.
Melissa Ganzi, board member and vice president of the Board of Directors for the museum, said proceeds will benefit the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in Lake Worth and its expansion plans for a new annex.
“We have been wanting to do an international event to raise money for the Polo Museum and Hall of Fame for a long time,” Melissa Ganzi said. “We thought this would be a nice time to have this kind of international match and fundraiser. We think it’s a perfect fit when everyone is home for the holidays.
“We are hoping for a good crowd,” Ganzi said. “Having this international game adds another level of excitement for the community. It’s also a great way to jump start the season.”
Said George J. Dupont, Jr., executive director of the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame said, “I am excited about the International Cup. Every museum in the country preserves part of yesterday for tomorrow. It’s what we do on a daily basis. This will bring interest to international level polo to the community. We are excited to be a part of it.”
Hale, the top American women’s player, will serve as team captain of the U.S. women’s team and Vestey will be England’s team captain.
The tentative U.S. men’s roster includes Wellington’s Nic Roldan, Jeff Hall, Stevie Orthwein and Marc Ganzi. Both official team rosters will be released next week.
